Can braking hard/skidding a little cause a brand new tire to show its wires?

the tire did not go flat. the 2 front tires are less than 1 month old. he says he was going about 40 mph when a car suddenly pulled out in front of him and he had to brake really hard, skidding a little. it just sounds crazy to me that the 1 tire on the front would show wires from this. he says he did not hit anything, not even the curb. the 2 front tires, again, are brand new. if one is showing wires from this braking incident, why are they both not? just makes no sense. we think something else probably happened and he doesn't want to tell. what do you yahooers think?
